The New Student Programs office oversees and implements a variety of academic initiatives within AAP and serves as the entry point for new students. New Student Programs most highly visible programs are AAP Presentations during Bruin Day and AAP Summer Programs. During Bruin Day and AAP Summer Programs, newly admitted students are invited to learn more about UCLA and the academic resources available through AAP. More importantly, students learn about the AAP’s Freshmen and Transfer Summer Programs available to acclimate newly admitted students to the academic rigors of UCLA.
Freshmen and Transfer Summer Programs
AAP offers two academic summer programs – The Freshman Summer Program and the Transfer Summer Program- which prepare students to succeed by exposing them to the rigor and demands of academic life and to undergraduate programs, services, and learning resources.
Students enroll in three University courses that meet UCLA requirements for graduation, and they receive personal attention, in either small groups or individual sessions, from teaching assistants and tutors. They are encouraged to live on campus and to participate in cultural and social events, interact with students of diverse backgrounds, build a network of friends, and broaden their life experiences and world outlook. AAP Administration
The AAP Administration office supports students by overseeing the distribution of AAP scholarships, coordinating key AAP-wide events (including the Scholarship Reception, Winston Doby Lecture series, and the Community of Excellence celebration), and managing the Computer Lounge. Through these programs and resources, the office works to provide academic support resources, create spaces for community building, and recognize student achievement. The AAP Freshmen Transfer Summer Program (F/TSP) is a rigorous seven-week residential academic summer program that prepares first generation, low-income, educationally disadvantaged and underserved students, to successfully transition to UCLA by exposing students to the rigor and demands of academic life, and to campus programs, services, learning resources, and networks.

Students in F/TSP receive personalized attention from professors, teaching assistants, counselors, and peer counselors. Additionally, students work closely with peer learning facilitators in small groups and one-on-one meetings where they gain transferrable skills to take responsibility for their own intellectual development. Students in F/TSP get a head start on their four years at UCLA by enrolling in three courses, earning 10-12 units of credit. The courses offered in FTSP provide students with an introduction to the university and research; advance their critical reading and writing skills; and explore the culture, history, and experiences of diverse communities. F/TSP encourages students to become leaders within the AAP community of scholars, where they will broaden their life experiences and world outlook and have an entire network of support that will extend throughout their time at UCLA.
As an F/TSP student, you will:
- Be challenged academically.
- Enroll in three university courses that meet UCLA’s graduation requirements.
- Receive close personal attention from professors, teaching assistants, counselors, and peer counselors.

Peer Learning
In F/TSP, you are paired with a Peer Learning Facilitator (PLF) for each of your F/TSP courses. PLFs are AAP undergraduates who are successful UCLA students. AAP Peer Learning is conducted in small groups, which enables you to be a part of an intellectual community that promotes discussion and allows you to listen to, grapple with, and articulate new and different perspectives. English Composition Peer Learning is one-on-one tutoring that teaches you to analyze and critique your own writing.

College Counseling
AAP Counselors provide you with information about university requirements and various academic opportunities, as well as, personal support and guidance.
Peer Counseling
AAP Peer Counselors (PCs) are undergraduate students who work closely with AAP academic counselors to further students’ academic and personal success. PCs also provide peer to peer support while living with students in the residence hall.

FEES
The basic cost of the 2025 Freshman Transfer Summer Program is around $7,792. This includes: a non-refundable $75 application fee, the Summer Sessions instructional fee of $2,790, a housing fee of $3,871, a health services fee of $586 and around $400 for textbooks, a $50 document fee, and personal expenses. Do not send any FSP payments until charges appear on your Summer Sessions Bruinbill account.
F/TSP Financial Aid
The UCLA Financial Aid Office (FAO) will award financial aid to students who have filed the FAFSA or CA DREAM Act on time and who are eligible. The FAO and AAP will award eligible students grant and scholarship money to cover some or all of the cost of room, board, instructional and student fees, and a health services fee. You may also use loans to cover additional costs.
Students enrolled in F/TSP will be notified via e-mail, when their summer electronic Financial Aid Notification (eFAN) letter is available for review. Students enrolled in F/TSP should receive their eFAN in early to mid-July.
F/TSP students
DO NOT apply for summer financial aid.
Students enrolled in F/TSP who have applied for the 2025-2026 FAFSA or CA DREAM ACT, and are eligible, are automatically considered for financial aid.
F/TSP students who receive their financial aid, prior to being billed for F/TSP, are responsible for retaining their financial aid funds to pay for F/TSP when billed.
F/TSP Fees
The $75 F/TSP application fee, the Summer instructional fee, document fee, and the health services fee will appear on your Summer Sessions BruinBill account early July.
Cancellation Costs
If you withdraw from F/TSP after being billed, you will be charged as follows: (a) $175 cancellation fee by UCLA Summer Sessions; (b) $586 for the non-refundable health services fee (c) a non-refundable $75 application fee and you will also have to pay back all, or a percentage of any summer grant money awarded to you.

You are responsible for paying the cost of attending UCLA’s New Student Orientation 104/204. This cost is not included among the costs of attending F/TSP. The Financial Aid Office does not provide financial aid for any New Student Orientation.
Students who receive a Pell Grant as a part of their financial aid package will have their orientation fees fully covered. You will still see a charge on your BruinBill account after attending orientation, but you will not need to pay for orientation.
If you are not a Pell Grant recipient and have concerns about the cost of the student and/or family orientation program, please contact the New Student Academic Programs office at newstudents@college.ucla.edu or 310-206-6685 (open during business hours, Monday-Friday, 9:00am-12:00pm and 1:00pm-5:00pm). When you contact their office, they will provide you with options that can ensure you have access to attending orientation; one of these options includes requesting a payment plan to distribute the session fees to be billed in Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters. If paying for New Student Orientation is the only reason preventing you from attending, please contact our office and we will work with you individually.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I begin my academic career at UCLA by attending F/TSP?
Your first quarter at UCLA will be extremely demanding. By attending AAP’s Freshman/Transfer Summer Program, you will be several steps ahead of other entering students. You will already be familiar with the rigorous demands of university study and will have earned units toward your degree. In addition, you will have formed important friendships with other students, made valuable contacts with AAP and other university staff, and met a number of UCLA faculty members.
Is there a separate housing application for F/TSP?
No, to reside in UCLA Dorms for F/TSP, there is no housing application to fill out. You select your housing preference when you apply for F/TSP. Students who select on campus housing are automatically considered for housing in the Dorms.
Do I need to apply for Summer financial aid for F/TSP?
No. Students enrolled in F/TSP, who have filed the FAFSA or Dream Act for the 2025-2026 academic year, and who are eligible, are automatically considered for financial aid. F/TSP students should NOT submit a summer financial aid application.
What is the difference between F/TSP and Summer Sessions?
F/TSP is designed to facilitate your transition to the university. You will be a part of a small cohort of students who are in the same courses and who are tutored together. You must take 3 courses, open only to F/TSP students. Regular Summer Sessions, on the other hand, is open to all entering and continuing students and to students not regularly enrolled at UCLA. And these students may enroll in any course they want.
Can I take Summer Sessions courses while I attend F/TSP?
No. You cannot concurrently enroll in both sessions.
Can I attend a UCLA New Student Orientation taking place during F/TSP?
No. All FSP students must attend New Student Orientation 104 before FSP classes begin. All TSP students must attend New Student Orientation 204 before TSP classes begin.
Will I receive credit for the classes that I take during F/TSP?
Yes. All classes offered in F/TSP are UCLA courses and meet either university graduation requirements or are prerequisites for required courses.
Can I take only one course without taking the other course it is paired with?
No.
Can I work while I attend F/TSP?
Yes. However, we don’t recommend it. You will need as much time as possible for your studies. In F/TSP, you will be in classes 20 hours a week; you will be in peer learning sessions 4 hours a week; and you will be reading, writing papers, working in the AAP Computer Lounge, and doing library research. If you are planning to work during F/TSP, you need to talk with an AAP Counselor or Peer Counselor about balancing your schoolwork with your job-related work.
Will I have free time?
Yes. You will have the opportunity to participate in some extracurricular activities at UCLA. However, you will need to manage your time wisely in order to successfully complete your academic work.

The Undergraduate Admissions Office must review all of your final official transcript(s) and remove your provisional admission status or you will be cancelled from F/TSP.
